College Readiness Program - Matching Grant!

Dear Friend:

I recently had a conversation with Larry, an elderly gentleman from one of our supporting churches. We were talking about the economic situation and the high unemployment rate in Austin. He said “there isn’t much you can do for people like that”. Being surprised at the comment, I pursued his meaning. Larry said “when you have people graduating from high school, if they graduate, that don’t really have an education, who can’t read, how can you expect them to be able to find a job in today’s world?”

Larry’s perception, while coming across as quite harsh, hits one of the critical nails on the head. That nail is the significant need for higher educational attainment for our neighborhood’s youth.

This past fall Circle Urban Ministries began a program that we believe will directly impact this issue. The program is the College Readiness Program which we were able to begin with a start up grant from a private foundation. At the end of 2009 we received a Matching Grant for College Readiness from a foundation from whom we had requested $50,000. They are giving us $25,000 and we need to match that amount with funds designated for the College Readiness Program.

We are very excited about what this grant means for the program. Thank you for taking time to read through this brief newsletter to learn about this significant program and then please, prayerfully consider joining the effort for Circle Urban to raise these matching funds.

Sincerely,

Glen Kehrein, Executive Dir.
