Dear Friend
I want to give you an update on the state of the ministry as we move into the new fiscal year. This past year has had its share of challenges and blessings.
What are our challenges?
When the recession hit several years ago, our general donations dropped significantly. While we have been seeing them rebuild gradually, they are still well below the pre-recession levels. In fact, we have just made another adjustment in staff, jobs, and salaries at Circle plus the temporary suspension of our food pantry.
This has been a very difficult time and process, but we are encouraged that the Lord is continuing to make His Presence known. One way we see God’s hand is through our blossoming relationship with Bridge2Freedom, a new ministry partner here on Circle’s campus. They are going to partner with Circle in the Food Pantry by providing the personnel to operate the pantry while Circle provides the database and food cost resources.
Another significant challenge has been my battle with colon cancer since last November. People’s prayers and God’s presence have truly sustained me and my family. Having just finished the initial intense round of 12 chemotherapy treatments, I’m encouraged by the reports from my doctors, and the ability to keep my regular work schedule at Circle.
What are the blessings?
Re-structured youth development programs – Since the very beginning of Circle Urban, youth development has been central to who we are. In the past two years we have added two cutting edge programs. These new programs, College Readiness and LIFT, complement our other youth programs, Circle4Success After-School and summer daycamp, and Mentoring. College Readiness prepares students for post-secondary success, and LIFT Performing Arts Program is equipping youth for life through the discipline of the arts and performance. Together the four programs are providing significant support and encouragement to our young people, ages 5 to 18, as they grow and develop.
Reinvigorated Board of Directors – We have been blessed with a wonderful group of committed Christian business people who are offering their expertise and networks to the ministry.
Strategic planning process – Now more than ever, having a clear strategy that guides us is critical. We are invigorated to see the significant role Circle Urban can continue to contribute in bringing transformation to our neighborhood. The strategic planning process is helping us to focus on our core areas of competency.
Staff commitment – In the face of having to do more with less, it has been a real blessing to work with a team of individuals who share the desire to serve the Lord in this place. Having a commonality of purpose, to be a light for the Lord in Austin and to see the Lord honored through our various roles, has unified us in new and significant ways.
All-in-all I feel encouraged as I look at how God is sustaining Circle Urban Ministries. Through our committed staff, energized board, and faithful supporters, Circle will continue to “transform Chicago’s Westside through faith in action”.
If you have been a supporter of Circle, thank you for being one of our faithful partners. Your gifts to Circle have sustained us through some difficult times, and I pray that your support will continue.
If you haven’t given before, or it has been a while since you contributed, it would be a tremendous help to us if you could include us in your giving. Whatever you are able to give, whether a one-time gift or on a regular schedule, will make a positive impact on our efforts to serve this community.
Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.
Glen Kehrein, Exec. Dir.
