Students cook up scheme to buy gifts for shelter children
It didn't start out as a way to give. It started out as a way for five students at Circle-Rock Preparatory School to fulfill their "PLP" requirement. PLPs (Personal Learning Plans) are projects students design with the help of their teachers, with the goal to explore areas they are interested in. Five middle-schoolers wanted to venture into the Hospitality Industry. So, with the help of teacher Grace Wango'mbe, they began to get their minds engaged and their hands involved in setting a table, cooking dinner, and serving people.
It wasn't long before someone suggested they find a way to bless someone else with all that good food. So, the students came up with the idea of holding a bake sale. The proceeds, they decided, would go toward buying toys for children in Circle's Eagle's Nest transitional housing program. They made or bought treats, sold them, and then bought basketballs, coloring books, trucks and more to present to the children in Eagle's Nest.“We learned how to do business, like deciding on the prices and how to give accurate change,” says student Zach Newsome.
"It's a good thing for them to think about others, not always to be on the receiving end," says Ms. Wang'ombe. For their final project, the ultimate test of their hospitality and giving skills: a full course buffet meal for CRPS staff!
