Volunteer no longer afraid to walk down our block

Mona Casey won't mince words when she talks about the last time she volunteered at Circle. "I was really scared fourteen years ago," she admits. "I couldn't wait to get inside the doors of Rock Church. That's how afraid I was."

This year Mona's church group from Grand Island, NE got ready to revisit us. As the only veteran volunteer, Mona was chosen to describe to her group what she remembered about our neighborhood.

"When we arrived here, they didn't believe one of my stories," Mona laughs. "It definitely has changed in the last fourteen years. It looks like so much of a cleaner area."

Fourteen years ago, one of the sites on Mona's tour was the "murder building," where new homes now stand (see photo, left). "I really didn't want to go visit the murder building," she recalls.

Yet when Mona heard her church was coming back to volunteer this year, "I said I wanted to go right away. I was anxious to see the change, because they had told me about their plans."

Since '91, Mona's life has also changed. "I became a single mom two years later," says Mona. "I realized as a single mom how hard it is to raise kids by yourself, and I am thankful that my church helped raise my kids. And I really believe in this program, how you guys want to change lives, not have handouts, and make a difference in people's lives for eternity."
